When expressed in SD, the closer to the mean, the closer the value will be to ±0 SD. As the distance

increases by ±1 SD, it gets closer to the minimum and maximum values. As the majority of cases fall

within the range of ±3 SD, with 68.3% falling within the range of ±1 SD, we can see that most of the

fetus measurement values are concentrated around the mean values.

The percentile method expresses the distributional position in terms of ranking from 0 to 100.

Therefore the position for the mean value is expressed as 50 percentile.

As in the diagram, the position for mean is 0 SD (which is 50 percentile), and the range between -1

SD and +1 SD corresponds to 68.3% of the total. If this is converted into a ranking between 0 and

100, it would mean that the range falls between 16 and 84.

Also, when the range falls between -2 SD and +2 SD, it corresponds to 95.5% of the total, i.e. that it

is between 3 and 97.

An SD value can be converted into percentile and vice-versa. If you wish to know the ranking for

the fetus’ measurements, select percentile. If you wish to know how far oﬀ the fetus' measurements

are from the average, select SD.

The ranges in the Growth Table Reference normally used in OB measurement data vary according

to the author, but the ranges most authors regard as normal and use are as follows:

1) When reference is written using SD.
